Names are important. In Scripture, names speak to the essence of character. Every church names their groups something different. Whether they are called small groups, community groups, or missional groups, they are all working to accomplish the same thing—build gospel community.
The name of our groups is not only consistent with the name of our church, but they also remind us that they are groups that are not intended to remain static—they exist as places to grow AND go together!
Road Groups exist to restore learning, experience restored community, and mobilize for restorative mission.
As a church, we are RESTORED to RESTORE. Our groups pursue THREE different restorative purposes led by THREE different leaders in each group:
PURPOSE #1: Restore Learning Together
Groups are where people devote themselves to biblical truth (e.g. sermon, study, etc.) and discuss how to apply it to their lives. It is hoped that, through relational connections made inside these group, personal discipleship can occur outside these groups. The DISCUSSION LEADER leads this aspect of the group. They set the direction, plan for the discussion, facilitate conversation, and organize prayer.
PURPOSE #2: Restore Fellowshipping Together
Groups are where people go to enjoy biblical friendship and rich hospitality. The environment should feel like family, where individuals can rest and relax over a shared meal and meaningful conversation—something to look forward to each week! It is hoped that everyone who gathers in a small group will feel restored by the tangible love from one another. The HOST COUPLE leads this aspect of the group. They coordinate communication, meeting times, meals, and childcare if needed.
PURPOSE #3: Restore Serving Together
Groups are where people mobilize and serve together. It is not enough to call the church to serve as a larger community. Done exclusively, this can enable the very kind of consumer-Christianity we are working against. It is hoped that our groups will serve in the community regularly so as to seek the “restoration” of the city we live in. The SERVICE LEADER leads this aspect of the group. They are in charge of planning an event connected with a local ministry in service to the city intentionally, regularly, and joyfully.
There will be new groups launching in the Fall. Check back to see an updated list. If you are a member and would like to START a new group, or, if you need help finding a group that works for you, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
