Historically, this strange text has been difficult to understand. This short exchange that occurs in Jesus hometown is found nowhere else but Matthew. When compared to passages like the transfiguration, this text feels almost inconsequential as it does little to further the narrative of Matthew. Commentators often react to this passage in two ways; they either provide ridiculous interpretations to try and create meaning or ignore it all together. But Paul wrote that “ALL SCRIPTURE” is God breathed and useful to equip us for every good work. It is possible, therefore, to learn something meaningful from fish and taxes. Read More
